Overview of publications
In this chapter I will provide an overview of all my publications that have appeared up to December 3, 2024. The total number is 581; I hope to add a few (or preferable: quite a lot) more. I have writte the most recent articles together with prof. dr. Thomas Rustemeyer of the Dermatoallergology Department of the Amsterdam University Medical Centers. I have received an appointment with him in June 2023 at the hospital for a year (unpaid, but I don't care) and my job is to supervise doctoral medical students in their scientific internship. Fortunately I can do everything from home and I don't have to go to Amsterdam, because I've become a bit of a hermit by now. I consider myself very fortunate that I can still do this at my age (now 73, I'm from 1951) and that my experience and efforts are appreciated!
Much research has been related to contact allergy to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in nail cosmetics, which is currently reaching epidemic proportions. Nearly 4% of all women tested with patch tests in Amsterdam now appear to be allergic to HEMA. In two-thirds of cases it is caused by nail cosmetics such as gel nails, acrylic nails and semi-permanent nail polish. We have written a nice article about this in the Dutch Journal of Dermatology and Venereology that can be downloaded for free by everyone on the Downloads page. Also easy to understand for people without a medical background and with a bunch of beautiful photos. I recently also started working with a PhD candidate as her daily supervisor. She conducts research into allergies to glucose sensors and insulin pumps, which are used by patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Various studies are in the pipeline, and it is expected that we will be working on them for another 3 years. I hope that I will be able to attend her promotion (first time as copromotor?). By the way, I have just written a review article on this subject that I have submitted to the medical journal Contact Dermatitis. Don't be alarmed, the article has almost 80 pages and is therefore much too large. I better cut it in half (so 2 articles), otherwise it probably won't be accepted. Very recently (it is now October 2, 2024) both were accepted for publication.
Meanwhile, my most recent book for hairdressers on hair and skin diseases of the scalp which I wrote together with Johan Toonstra and Ids Boersma, another dermatologist friend has been published (see the fantastic cover below). Soon I hope to start working on the updates of my previously published books in the Monographs in Contact Allergy series. I will publish these myself as digital booklets (with an official ISBN number) and then place them on this website so that everyone can download them for free (so at least my website will be visited every now and then). I hope the universe will allow me to do all this.
You will notice that I show some cartoons here and there 'ter vermaeck' (a medieval Dutch expression for 'for amusement') except in the lists with 'All publications'. Since lists alone are obviously boring and of interest to hardly anyone, I have also included in many places some nice clinical pictures with explanatory text and some more information about a particular book or article, when interesting enough for the highly honored public. And of course the necessary anecdotes are not missing! So please have a look and you will not be disappointed..........
